Gloucester Cathedral opens its doors for Heritage Open Days with special experiences

As part of Heritage Open Days, a nationwide initiative celebrating history and culture, Gloucester Cathedral invites visitors to explore the building’s magnificent medieval architecture between Thursday 12 and Saturday 14 September at special events and experiences. All are free and open to all.

On Thursday 12 and Saturday 14 September, the Cathedral will be open later than normal, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the beauty of the Cathedral in the evening between 6pm and 8pm at special ‘Late-Night Openings’. The serene atmosphere, soaring ceilings, and intricate details of one of England's most remarkable historic sites will be on full display. There is no need to book for access to these late-night openings.

The Cathedral is also offering visitors the opportunity to experience the Cathedral's 15th Century Library like never before at an Immersive Soundscape on Friday 13 September between 10.15am and 4.15pm. Absorb the atmosphere in this rarely seen space with a soundscape which features a unique piece of music inspired by the history of the building and the grandeur of old times within the library. Each session lasts 15 minutes and require pre-booking. Please book on the Cathedral website.

During the day on Saturday 14 September, visitors can experience the living history of the Parliament Rooms, which is where Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn stayed in 1535. Drop-in sessions are also being held in the Stonemasons’ workshop – one of only ten Cathedral workshops in the country. This is a brilliant opportunity for visitors to learn about the traditional heritage skills used to keep the Cathedral in pristine condition for future generations.
