Believe it or not, our humble Town has quite the sporting prowess and active history! Of course, we cannot think 'active' without mentioning one of Cheltenham's most famous sons, Edward Wilson, Explorer. Scientist, natural historian, polar explorer and ornathologist (who also dabbled in painting), was renowned for his love of the countryside and being active, ultimately becoming a naturalist. He ultimately went on to become a polar explorer with Scott, taking part in the Discovery Expedition to Antarctica in 1902, an expedition which became at the time the most southerly trek ever by an explorer. He then of course went on to take part in the ill-fated Terra Nova expedition as Scott's Chief of the Scientific Staff. Despite making great exploratory strides, reaching the South Pole, they were pipped to the post by Amundson and his team just five weeks earlier.
Aside from famous sons, The Gloucestershire Cricket Festival is hosted every year at Cheltenham College, we have one of the few remaining outdoor lido's in the country, we're home to horseracing and there's plenty of outdoor pursuits including clay pigeon shooting for example. We also host a number of county tournaments and events, so keep your eyes peeled for those!
An extra coup for the Town is news that in February 2019, we will be the official host Town for the World Grand Prix in Snooker, which will be held at Cheltenham Racecourse. Coming to the Centaur, it is a first for the town and we cannot wait. Watch this space for ticket info...
