The festival season is officially underway in Cheltenham, The Festival Town, and this year promises an exciting lineup of events to kick off the summer. With so many to choose from, picking just a few to highlight is tough! But here at Visit Cheltenham, we've done our best to curate a selection of the festivals we're most excited about in the coming months. Keep reading for a taste of what's to come.

Cheltenham Jazz Festival
This annual festival is the first date I add to my calendar every year! There is simply no better place to spend the May bank holiday weekend. We love meeting with friends at the festival village in Montpellier Gardens and eating great food whilst listening to the free music stage. The atmosphere at the festival village, and across the whole town, thanks to the free …around town programme, is always absolutely fantastic. This year, the festival promises unique experiences, from the diverse music lineup to the vibrant atmosphere, that will leave you eager to attend.
This year's ticketed lineup is again superb, from Lulu to Jools Holland, David Gray, Lisa Stansfield and Emeli Sande. Artists that may not typically come across as exclusively Jazz artists. The festival has something for everyone. We always book at least one performance in the Big Top; this year, I've booked Beverley Knight, who I'm sure will be fabulous!
Wychwood Festival
Wychwood is an absolute gem. Frequent winners of the Best Family Festival, it's a place where everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, can find something to enjoy. Offering three full days of brilliant live music, comedy, activities, and workshops, with something on offer for all ages and interests. There is simply no better way to spend a summer weekend. It attracts some of the friendliest people you'll ever meet and is in the most glorious setting next to Cheltenham Racecourse with the backdrop of Cleeve Hill, the highest point of the Cotswold Hills.

Literature Festival
I eagerly anticipate the Cheltenham Literature Festival – a calendar highlight every year. The programme is vast, with something for everyone. I look forward to setting an hour aside to flick through the programme, circling everything that catches my interest before whittling that list down. After all, there's only so much time (and budget!). The variety of the programme, from talks by big names to more immersive experiences, will leave you excited and curious about what the festival has to offer.
I always see some of the big names; past favourites have included the likes of Richard Curtis and Richard Osman, whose insights never fail to entertain and inspire. But for me, part of the magic is also taking a chance on something unexpected - picking a talk or author I know little about to discover a new perspective or hidden gem. I also love the festival's more immersive (and free!) experiences, catching a thought-provoking session in the Voicebox, joining the lively and informal Lit Crawl, or simply soaking up the atmosphere in a familiar venue reimagined for the occasion.

Lions at Large - Pride of Gloucestershire Trail
As a parent, I'm thrilled about the upcoming Lions at Large trail coming to Cheltenham and Gloucester this summer! Thirty-two large lion sculptures designed and painted by local artists will line the streets from 11th July to 14th September. They will be joined by a Cub Club – a pride of little lions lovingly created by local schools and community groups.
I can’t wait to follow the trail with my family, discovering beautifully painted lion sculptures along the way. It is a fun and free activity for the summer holidays and will help raise funds for Cheltenham & Gloucester Hospitals Charity and the Big Space Cancer Appeal.
Cotswold Festival of Steam
The Cotswold Festival of Steam is more than just a weekend event; it's a trip back in time. For me, it's an opportunity to introduce my kids to the wonders of steam engines from a different era. The distinct smell of coal, the rhythmic sound of the tracks, and the thrill of riding in vintage carriages while passing through the stunning Cotswold landscape create a magical experience.
Whether it's the nostalgic charm or the unique atmosphere, it's no surprise the Steam Festival was named 'Best Event in the Cotswolds' in 2023. The festival starts on 24 May, so don't miss out - grab your tickets now!

Cheltenham Science Festival
The Cheltenham Science Festival never disappoints - it's an annual adventure into the world of discovery. It's about satisfying my curiosity and sparking excitement in my daughter. I love seeing her eyes light up as we explore the hands-on exhibits, attend talks, and participate in experiments. This year, we're incredibly excited for the Real CSI event, exploring the fascinating world of forensics with actual crime scene investigators.
Food & Drink Festival
As someone who loves cooking and exploring new flavours, the Cheltenham Food & Drink Festival is a highlight of my summer.
Picture yourself strolling through Montpellier Gardens, tasting local gin, attending workshops, and enjoying the sunshine—what could be better?

Race Night
As someone who loves racing without the crowds, the annual Race Night in May is my kind of event! It's the only evening race of the year, offering thrilling competition, a lively party atmosphere, and stunning sunsets. It's family-friendly, with kids running free without a care in the world. The fun doesn't stop after the final lap – the action spills over into an epic afterparty trackside, with local legends The Chip Shop Boys bringing the beats. See out for the season in style, and we'll see you on the track.
2000Trees Festival
I first attended the 2000Trees festival in 2022, and this year will mark my fourth attendance (we took a break in 2024). It is an intimate yet high-energy event with a welcoming vibe and a passionate crowd. Suppose you're a fan of alternative music. In that case, there's something for everyone - from the laid-back acoustic sessions in the forest to the high-octane performances at the main and cave stages. Described by Kerrang! as Britain's coolest festival, 2000Trees lives up to the hype!

Fantasy Forest
Fantasy Forest Festival at Sudeley Castle is a one-of-a-kind festival set on the glorious grounds of Sudeley Castle, where you can dress as whimsically or as fiercely as you desire. Every year, visitors arrive in exceptional outfits that make the event feel magical. It's the perfect weekend for friends and family, with so much to enjoy, including live music and market stalls.
Cheltenham Observation Wheel
I'm looking forward to the Cheltenham Observation Wheel returning to Imperial Gardens this Spring. The Observation Wheel offers spectacular views across Cheltenham town and the surrounding countryside, which I wouldn't usually get the chance to see. It's the perfect activity to experience with friends and family.
