Purple Flag Status
Cheltenham is officially a purple flag town, demonstrating our commitment to providing a safe and vibrant evening out. We have been awarded the accolade every year since the first application in 2016, and have a brilliant night time economy.
The Purple Flag Scheme is a town and city centre award similar to the blue flag scheme for beaches. The awards reflect the feel of the town between 5pm and 5am, taking account of everything from overnight transport and pedestrain links, late-night public transport, as well as the variety and availability of entertainment, art and cultural events throughout the year.
Cheltenham's night time economy includes a vibrant restaurant and eatery scene, plenty of bars and pubs that suit every taste and preference, as well as several entertainment spots that include comedy, theatre and shows. Assessors of the award for 2018 commented that they were impressed by the choice and mix of what's available in the town and in 2019, Cheltenham was nominated for a special award for the 'appeal' of the town, on the basis of the well-lit buildings, good street cleaning and safety for walkers and people on their own. The results will be announced in June 2019 at a special ceremony.
We recommend that visitors make the most of what's on offer in the town centre, as well as at The Brewery Quarter, in Montpellier, in The Suffolks, along Bath Road and along the Promenade.
The awards are made by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM).
