Our Promenade was listed by Google as one of the best shopping streets in the UK, and the town is home to one of the oldest purpose-built shopping arcades in the country - The Montpellier Arcade.

Cheltenham offers traditional shopping streets, many housed in our gorgeous Regency buildings, combining the High Street brands you know and love including John Lewis, Boots & Marks and Spencers, with fantastic independent retailers who offer unique products you won't find anywhere else. We thoroughly recommend every shopping trip to Cheltenham should include a visit to our shopping districts - The Promenade, Montpellier, The Suffolks, Tivoli and Bath Road. 

Several years ago much of the High Street was completely revamped and the pedestrianised areas extended. Some 1970s office blocks were torn down to make way for open streets. The project connected The Brewery Quarter fully to the High Street, resulting in a modern and vibrant shopping district not seen before in the town.  John Lewis Cheltenham opened in 2018.  It is a welcome and popular addition to our retail offering. 

A report published in 2023 clearly showed that Cheltenham outperforms the national average on town centre vacant shop units. Cheltenham Borough Council is currently investing in a multi-million-pound town centre project to ensure our vibrant town centre continues to offer a strong retail offer and future growth.

The Regent Arcade Shopping Centre is Cheltenham’s under cover shopping destination. Located in the heart of Cheltenham and conveniently positioned to link the High Street with The Promenade, the Arcade boasts an impressive line-up of over 60 retail stores and dining options all under one roof. The arcade is also home to Kit William’s iconic Wishing Fish Clock since Regent Arcade’s opening in 1985, which is the world’s largest mechanical clock and has enchanted generations of children by blowing bubbles and playing its familiar signature tune on the hour and half hour. A tourist attraction in its own right, our clock and its beloved characters are now the subject of their very own children’s book, written by Miranda Walker and illustrated by Hannah Shaw.

As shopping is such a key part of Cheltenham, Cheltenham BID (Business Improvement District) launched a new Cheltenham gift card.  Recipients can spend at a wide range of town centre businesses with over 100 shops and places to eat in Cheltenham accepting the card.
