Cheltenham is a fine place to visit in any season but it is especially wonderful in Winter. From parks and gardens to restaurants and retreats, Cheltenham is sure to warm your heart. We asked our Cheltenham Champion Jamie from Thrifty Mumma Thrifty Bubba for her take on the town's top spots this season...
Pittville Park
Walking distance from Cheltenham town centre and free to visit, Pittville Park offers entertainment for the whole family. Parking is free and plentiful and with three cafes to choose from you can walk with a hot drink in hand. Children are spoilt for choice with a large well-equipped play area as well as animals and aviaries to visit on the Eastern side alongside a smaller play area on the Western side. History lovers will be in their element as the park is overlooked by the Grade 1 listed Pittville Pump Room where you can even taste the spa waters! Dogs are welcome and with woodland walks and lakes to explore Pittville Park is wonderful in Winter.
Crickley Hill Country Park
Complete with a car park, café and unparalleled views of the Severn Vale, Crickley Hill Country Park is the perfect place for a brisk walk whatever the weather. Just outside of Cheltenham, this popular area of outstanding natural beauty is also an archaeological site of interest complete with its own Iron Age fort. In the snow this escarpment resembles a ski resort with sledges and snowmen frequenting the slopes.
Snowdrops
It is snowdrop season and Gloucestershire offers a number of venues where these delicate flowers can be seen on display. Hailed as ‘England’s greatest snowdrop garden’, Colesbourne Park is close to Cheltenham and each year produces a historic collection of 350 varieties. This weekend (2-3 March 2019) visitors are offered reduced admission for only £5 per person. Parking is ample and visitors can enjoy all the 10-acre garden has to offer including lakeside and woodland walks.
The Greenway Hotel and Spa
Crisp days and cold nights can leave us wishing to indulge in some self-care. Situated just outside Cheltenham town centre The Greenway Hotel and Spa is the perfect place to visit when wishing to relax and unwind. Leave the hustle and bustle behind and head to this elegant Elizabethan retreat where ESPA treatments will melt your cares away. Boasting an al-fresco hot tub warmed by an open fire, The Greenway offers sumptuous spa days allowing you to enjoy a hydrotherapy pool, thermal suite and state-of-the-art gymnasium.
The Ivy
This Winter, The Ivy Cheltenham is the place to be for dining with a difference. Set in Montpellier’s Grade I listed Rotunda building, The Ivy Cheltenham offers impeccable service alongside a stylish, sophisticated menu served from dawn till dusk. The cocktail bar, complete with cascading Ivy plants, is a popular attraction and the décor centred on Cheltenham Races makes for stunning scenery.
It’s clear to see that you are spoilt for choice when visiting Cheltenham. However you choose to spend your visit, Cheltenham is ready to welcome you this Winter.
