With World Theatre Day fast approaching, we’re celebrating Cheltenham’s amazing theatrical venues.
We’re lucky to be home to several wonderful theatres and a packed calendar of world-class performances, from West End hits and indie darlings to household names from comedy and music. We know we say it a lot, but there truly is something for everyone!
As such, we have rounded up a handful of top performances that we can’t wait to see this year. Narrowing it down to 10 was nearly impossible, so make sure to check out the venue websites to see everything coming to Cheltenham.
The Girl on The Train – 25 to 29 March
Based on the best-selling novel, "The Girl on The Train" is a gripping psychological thriller that has captivated audiences worldwide. This stage adaptation brings the suspenseful story to life and is set to kick off the year in dramatic style.
The Shark is Broken - 22 to 26 April
Go behind the scenes of the classic film "Jaws" with "The Shark Is Broken," a comedic play that delves into the challenges faced during the movie's production. This unique theatrical experience is coming to the Everyman in April.
Pinocchio - 22 to 25 May
The classic tale of "Pinocchio" comes to life in this enchanting production suitable for all ages. Follow the wooden puppet's journey to become a real boy in this heartwarming show at the Playhouse Theatre.
North by Northwest - 3 to 7 June
It would be strange, would it not, if, in a city of seven million people, one man were never mistaken for another...
But that is exactly what happens to Roger Thornhill, reluctant hero of North by Northwest, when a mistimed phone call to his mother lands him smack bang in the middle of a Cold War conspiracy. Now he’s on the run, dodging spies, airplanes and a femme fatale who might not be all she seems.
King Arthur – 17 to 19 July
Step into the world of medieval legend with "King Arthur," a raucous retelling of the famous British myth. This epic production is set to captivate audiences with twists and turns and plenty of belly laughs. Coming to the Everyman in July.
Open Air Theatre Festival - August
A highlight of the summer in Cheltenham, the Tuckwell Open-Air Theatre Festival is, in our opinion, one of the best ways to experience the magic of theatre. Featuring musicals, comedy, live music and lots of melodrama, there’s something to suit all sensibilities. Currently, it is not confirmed whether the festival will return in 2025, but you will hear about it first when it is.
Jerusalem – 10 to 13 September
Jez Butterworth's critically acclaimed play "Jerusalem" returns to the stage, offering a raw and poetic exploration of English identity and rural life. This powerful production will be performed at the Playhouse theatre.
Friends! The Musical Parody – 7 to 11 October
Fans of the iconic TV show "Friends" won't want to miss this hilarious musical spoof that lovingly lampoons the beloved series. Expect all your favourite moments and characters brought to life on stage in a way you've never seen before. Seven performances are scheduled for October at the Everyman Theatre.
Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts – 4 to 8 November
Dive into a chilling new mystery with the legendary Inspector Morse in "House of Ghosts." This stage adaptation promises suspense, intrigue, and the cerebral detective work that fans have come to love. Catch this gripping performance at the Everyman theatre.
